Topic 1: Netflix

«Netflix has to change: why the biggest streaming company is in trouble»

The streaming giant has been in significant trouble for the past few months. Let’s see some of the reasons.

We will focus the conversation on the following questions:

  1. Do you use streaming services often?
  2. Why do you think companies such as Netflix or HBO cancel shows?
  3. Is it better for a platform to have a wider catalogue, or to have less series but more work behind each of them?
  4. Do you prefer to binge watch series, or to watch them at your own pace?
  5. Do you think Netflix will struggle to survive in the future?

Here we leave you some vocabulary you can use during the talk: 

  • Big deal: relevant, of importance
  • Flash in the pan: something with a very short-lived impact, a fad
  • Crack down (on something): To be very strict about something, to punish or restrict severely
  • Leave out to dry: To give something or someone no help at all
  • (Leave) in droves: To leave in great numbers
  • Appeal: attractive,a desirable thing
  • Binge watching: watching large amounts of content in a short period of time
  • Struggle: have a hard time

 

Topic 2: Data analysis

«What are the main steps of data analysis?»

Here we can see the most relevant parts of this process.

 We will focus the conversation on the following questions:

  1. What are some objectives that could be set for data analysis?
  2. What are the differences between first-party, second-party, and third-party data?
  3. Can you name and describe some of the tasks involved in data scrubbing?
  4. Do you conduct any kind of data analysis in your business?
  5. How would you share an important finding in the analysis with your colleagues? 

Here we leave you some vocabulary you can use during the talk:

  • Straightforward: simple, easy to understand
  • Sales pipeline: the series of steps that a buying customer goes through, from start to finish

  • Slick: fluid, without interruption
  • i.e. : for example

  • Back to square one: back to the beginning
  • Daunting: intimidating
  • Insight: an understanding
  • Stakeholders: people with shares in a company

  • Cherry-pick: to choose in a discriminating way, leaving things out deliberately

 

Topic 3: European energy crisis

«Why is everything so expensive lately?»

Energy costs have an impact on everything. Here we can learn why they have grown so much.

 We will focus the conversation on the following questions:

  1. How much have you felt the impact of the rise in gas prices?
  2. How much does the EU need to reduce gas usage?
  3. Can you enumerate some of the alternative energy sources in the video?
  4. What EU countries will struggle the most?
  5. What are some of the measures proposed to deal with the gas shortages?

Here we leave you some vocabulary you can use during the talk:

  • Shipment: a cargo being delivered

  • Bear: to carry the weight of something

  • Business as usual: a normal situation, nothing extraordinary going on

  • Legally bound: forced by law to do something

  • Unscathed: intact, without any harm

  • Shortage: a lack of something

  • Shortfall: an insufficient amount, the difference between a goal and the current amount

  • Constrained: limited, restricted by something

  • On paper: theoretically

  • Stave off: to fight off something, to push it back

  • Standstill: idle, stopped

  • Mothballed: decommissioned but kept in reserve for possible future use
